For this blog, we will be continuing our series of national food days recognized in August by US Foods. Some good national days are coming up to send summer out with a bang! Now, let's dive into them below!

August 3rd: National Watermelon Day

August 3rd: National Watermelon Day

To kick off August, we are starting with National Watermelon Day! Watermelons are often seen as the quintessential summer fruit with their popular association with barbecues, picnics, and warm weather. Watermelons are the most consumed melon in the United States, making them the most popular melon in the US! Watermelons have a high water content, which makes them quite refreshing and hydrating. Watermelon season runs from May to September, with peaks in July and August due to them growing best in warm and dry climates. Watermelons thrive between 70-85 degrees Fahrenheit, and they typically take 2-3 months to grow to full size, which ranges between 6-50lbs. Fun fact: the largest watermelon ever grown was grown in Tennessee, and it weighed 350.5 lbs! Enjoy this fresh summer sweet today by the slice, in a fruit salad, or topped with feta and mint!

August 5th: National Oyster Day

On August 5th, Oysters will be nationally recognized. Oysters have been a part of the human diet for thousands of years and were a staple food for prehistoric peoples. 5 main species of oysters are commonly eaten in the United States: Pacific, Kumamoto, Atlantic (also known as Eastern or Virginica), European Flat, and Olympia, each with their unique texture and taste. For example, Pacific Oysters are popular for their large size and are firm in texture, compared to Kumamoto oysters, which are smaller and sweeter. Oysters are eaten in a variety of ways, and the options seem endless. Many enjoy eating oysters raw, served on half the shell and topped with lemon juice, mignonette, or cocktail sauce. This is the classic way to enjoy oysters, as it maximizes the flavor of the oyster and provides the full oyster experience. Additionally, oysters are eaten grilled, fried, baked, broiled, or in stew or chowder. Go try an oyster today on National Oyster Day, and share your review on Voodies!

August 8th: National Frozen Custard Day

Nationally recognized on August 8th is not necessarily the first food you think of when you think of frozen desserts, as it recognizes frozen custard and not ice cream. You may be wondering what makes frozen custard different from ice cream, and we have the answer for you. Frozen custard has a minimum percentage of 1.4% egg yolk when it is being produced, compared to ice cream, which may or may not have egg yolks in it. Additionally, frozen custard is churned at a slower pace than ice cream, resulting in less air in the dessert, making it more dense. With a slower churning process and higher egg yolk percentage, frozen custard has a denser, richer, and smoother taste in comparison to ice cream. Frozen custard was first discovered in 1919 in Coney Island, NY, by Archie and Elton Kohr. They were ice cream vendors who added egg yolk to their ice cream and discovered the difference in consistency. The Midwestern region of the United States is known as the frozen custard capital of the world, so if you are ever traveling around in that area, make sure you pick up a cone. Frozen custard is delicious, and we hope you treat yourself to this frozen dessert today and share your review on Voodies!

August 11th: National Panini Day

What makes a Panini different from a traditional sandwich? Well, we will dive into that now so you will know exactly how they differ when you get your panini on August 11th. A panini is a grilled Italian sandwich that is typically pressed in a panini press. This method gives the sandwich its own flavor profile, such as a warm, crispy exterior, combined with a warm and melted interior. These sandwiches are typically made with Italian types of bread: focaccia and ciabatta, and are typically ½’’ thick to avoid being too “bready”.  Paninis have a variety of fillings that range from various meats, cheeses, vegetables, and spreads; there truly is no shortage of fillings for paninis. The end result is a delicious, crispy on the outside, melted on the inside sandwich. Go and get a panini today, and share it with us on Voodies!

August 16th: National Rum Day

Rum, rhymes with yum. It is one of the oldest spirits, dating back to the 17th century, from the Caribbean region. Rum, made from fermented sugarcane, is sold in various forms such as light, gold, dark, and spiced, each with unique characteristics. The alcohol is commonly associated with pirates as they used it to make water last longer and remain happy while at sea. Today, rum is the base for various delicious cocktails such as Mojitos, Mai Tais, Daquiris, and Pina Coladas, all offering their own flavor profile and escape to paradise.

August 19th: National Hot and Spicy Day

Now, before we get into National Hot and Spicy Day, we should note that this day may not be for everyone, particularly those with a low spice tolerance. However, for those who crave and love the spiciness, this day is for you! National Hot and Spicy Day recognizes all things hot and spicy, no matter how mild or intense. This may look like having your favorite cocktail with some flair, such as a spicy Margarita. Or you could put hot sauce on everything you eat, or try that new spicy recipe you’ve been scared to eat. August 19th: National Potato Day

Potatoes, I would argue, are one of, if not the most, versatile foods. Fries, potato salad, chips, baked potatoes, roasted potatoes, hash browns–the options seem endless. With each potato dish creating its own experience, you must eat potatoes in one of the countless forms today. Potatoes have been around for 7,000 - 10,000 years and were first domesticated in the Andes Region of South America. Potatoes thrive in a cool, moderate climate and have a long growing season of 80-110 days. These starchy, vitamin C-rich vegetables are delicious and were the first vegetable grown in space! Today, treat yourself to a side of fries, mashed potatoes, potato salad, or whatever potato form your taste buds prefer.

August 27th: National Burger Day

This classic American staple is widely consumed in the United States, and we challenge you to guess how many burgers are consumed by Americans nationwide. Now lock in that number, because the correct answer is 50 billion burgers consumed. This probably does not come as a surprise, but this means the United States is the country that consumes the most burgers worldwide. The name of this American staple stems from Hamburg, Germany, and gained popularity in the United States in the 1900s. Classic hamburger toppings include lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions, with condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise, and mustard. However, there is truly no limit on creativity for burger flavor combos. These include breakfast burgers, such as adding an egg to your burger, mac-and-cheese burgers, and blue cheese burgers; the options are truly endless. We hope you treat yourself to the most widely consumed food in the United States today, with a flavor profile of your choice, and don’t forget to leave that review on Voodies!
