July 4th: National Barbecue Day

July 4th: National Barbecue Day

While this day is also recognized on May 16th, National Barbecue Day is celebrated on July 4th as well. What makes Barbecue, Barbecue? Well, barbecue, commonly abbreviated as BBQ, is when you cook meat on a low and indirect heat source such as charcoal or wood. This allows the meat to cook fully without interacting directly with the flame, and the smoke from the wood or charcoal creates a smoky flavor. Across the different regions in the United States, you will find a great variety of barbecue sauces, with each region offering its own individual spin. Some of the key regional styles include Texas BBQ, Kansas City BBQ, Memphis BBQ, and Carolina BBQ. Texas BBQ is more known for smoked brisket, beef ribs, and sausage. These meats are paired with a group of spices and herbs that are rubbed onto the meat before cooking, known as a dry rub, and minimal sauce, to enhance the smoky flavor from the wood-fired cooking. Kansas City BBQ focuses on a range of meats such as pork, beef, chicken, and sausage with a tomato and molasses-based sauce. This sauce creates and combines a thick, sweet, and tangy flavor. Memphis BBQ uses a tomato base similar to Kansas City but is on the thinner side and incorporates vinegar and mustard. Memphis primarily focuses on pork or ribs and is also prepared with a dry rub. Carolina BBQ focuses on pork and has a thin, vinegar-based sauce. BBQ is a big player in cuisine all across the United States. With a range of regional flavors, find which sauce fits your tastebuds, and enjoy barbeque this July under the hot sun.

July 6th: National Fried Chicken Day

As KFC says, “It’s Finger Lickin' Good,” which is exactly how I would describe fried chicken.  July 6th nationally recognizes the favorite food of many and a staple of Southern United States cuisine. Fried Chicken is made exactly as it sounds, by coating chicken in a seasoned flour or batter and then deep-frying in oil. The exact origin of this dish is unknown, but it is believed that fried chicken has ties to Scotland. This yummy comfort food is commonly paired with waffles, and other southern dishes such as macaroni and cheese, biscuits, and mashed potatoes. Additionally, it pairs well with various sauces such as honey mustard, barbecue sauce, and ranch dressing. Get out there today and enjoy this delicious, golden fried snack!

June 13th: National French Fry Day

July 13th recognizes the most popular side dish in America, French Fries. Contrary to the name, French Fries are not exactly French. While not officially confirmed, it is widely believed that French Fries originated in Meuse Valley, Belgium, in the late 1600s. One day, when the river was frozen, the Belgians fried their potatoes the same way that they fried their fish. The delicious snack was brought back to the United States after World War I, as American soldiers who were stationed in Europe developed a love for the food. A popular side dish for cheeseburgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, and commonly offered at various restaurants, French Fries are recognized as the most popular side dish! With various cuts such as waffle fries, potato wedges, curly fries, and more, grab your favorite cut and sauce, and enjoy these golden potatoes today.

June 24th: National Tequila Day

Margarita, Paloma, Mexican Mules, and Tequila Sunrise are just a few of your favorite Tequila beverages. Tequila is nationally recognized on July 24th, so why not raise a toast with this Mexican classic? Tequila originates from the blue agave plant and hails from Jalisco, Mexico, where the first large Tequila distillery was built. In order to make the alcohol, the heart of the plant is harvested, cooked, and then fermented. Tequila is one of the most popular types of alcohol in the United States and is greatly loved across all regions of the country. Enjoy your favorite Tequila cocktail in the summer sun.

July 29th: National Chicken Wing Day

BBQ, Buffalo, Honey Mustard, Garlic Parmesan, Lemon Pepper–take your pick, and celebrate National Chicken Wing Day on July 29th. This classic American dish is made up of the chicken’s wing, which includes the drummette, wingette, and the wing tip, and is traditionally deep-fried in the sauce of choice. Chicken wings originated in Buffalo, New York, and came to us via Teressa Bellissimo. She was the co-owner of the Anchor Bar and created this timeless and delicious dish after her son and friends asked for a late-night snack. After deep-frying the chicken wings and tossing them with hot sauce, the dish became popular at the bar and quickly spread throughout Buffalo. During the 70s and 80s, Chicken Wings spread throughout the United States, and in 1977, the city of Buffalo declared this day “Chicken Wing Day.” Whether you prefer your chicken wings sweet like honey or on the citrus side, there is a chicken wing flavor for you, and we hope you enjoy them on this day.

July 31st: National Avocado Day

Avocados are one of the most popular fruits and are native to Mexico, Central America, and South America. Avocados are believed to have originated in Puebla, Mexico, in 10,000 B.C., and are considered to be part of the berry family despite their savory flavor profile. Whether you prefer this superfood in the form of guacamole, the most popular brunch dish that took the 2010s by storm, or an avocado salad, there is an avocado dish for you.
