Summer 2025 Coffee Guide: A Crash Course on Everything Coffee

Coffee, one of the most popular and versatile drinks in the world, has spiced it up this summer with various and intriguing flavors. From the local coffee shop around the corner to the spot you found trending on social media to the internationally known coffee chains, the flavors will keep you on your toes and leave you wanting more. Today, we are going to dive into the newest coffee flavors of summer, and who knows? Maybe you will find your new favorite drink.

Before checking out the delicious flavor combos baristas across the country are brewing up, it’s first important to understand the various coffee ingredients that make up this global drink. Coffee beans, the raw material used to make coffee, grow in the tropical and warm climates of South and Central America, Africa, and Asia. The coffee beans themselves are the most crucial ingredient, of which there are four types: Arabica, Robusta, Liberica, and Excelsa. Arabica is the most popular bean as it makes up about 60% of coffee production globally. Once the beans have been harvested, they are roasted at different levels creating different flavor profiles as some are more acidic, bold, or bitter.

These beans create one of the most popular and crucial parts of coffee drinks called espresso. Espresso is a coffee style that is extremely concentrated, and is made by hot water running through finely-ground coffee beans under high pressure. With high pressure and the fine grind, an intense and bold concentrated coffee beverage is made. Espresso is a crucial base ingredient which many coffee beverages build off of. These beverages include Lattes, Mochas, Cappuccinos, Americanos, and Machiatos, but what exactly are the differences? While each drink varies, they all start with an espresso shot. We we will go through them below:

Americanos are a simple and popular drink, which mixes espresso shots with water, this beverage can be made with hot or iced water and is known for its highly concentrated espresso flavoring.

Lattes are made with espresso and steamed milk and are highly customizable. Iced lattes are also extremely popular, which include normal milk and ice, rather than steamed milk. Many individuals use milk alternatives such as Oat, Almond, Soy, or Coconut as dairy free alternatives, and add flavored syrups to the beverage.

Mochas are a chocolate-flavored variation Latte, meaning chocolate flavoring is added to the beverage.

Cappuccinos are classic Italian coffees which have three parts: espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam.

Macchiatos are an espresso shot with a small amount of steamed milk; people say that the espresso is “stained” or “marked” with a small amount of milk.

There are also types of coffee made from coffee grounds that are a bit more coarse, compared to being extremely fine for espresso. Additionally, espresso is a more pressurized and concentrated brew compared to Drip Coffee and Cold Brew which are made over a longer period of time. But what are Drip Coffee and Cold Brew?

Drip coffee, an extremely popular way of drinking coffee, is made by filtering hot water through ground coffee beans, and is often an accessible and popular way of making coffee.

Cold Brew is made by steeping coarsely ground beans in bold or room temperature for typically a period of 12-24 hours without heat, and uses the same grounds as drip coffee.

These are both popular methods and are just as delicious as espresso-based drinks; it just depends on what kind of coffee you are looking for.

A second popular flavor this summer is Banana Lattes or Banana Bread Lattes. This beverage has seen increased mentions across social media, and many individuals have shared this recipe across social media platforms as many cafes are offering this drink as a seasonal beverage. While not all cafes offer it as a Latte, some offer it as a Cold Brew with Banana Bread cold foam. Both options sound delicious.

Our fourth and final flavor is Lavender. While Lavender has been around for a bit, it truly had its moment last year when Starbucks introduced it as its summer flavor. Since then, we have seen an increase in popularity in Lavender flavored coffee, most commonly through Lavender Syrup.
